Frequently Asked Questions
Psychotherapy – oftentimes referred to as simply “therapy” – comes in many different shapes and sizes. Many people associate therapy with “talk therapy” where the person and the therapist simply talk about a problem instead of coming up with a solution. The goal of therapy then becomes just getting emotional support for one’s problems. Such support can be very beneficial. On the other hand, people can get stuck in their problems when that’s all they do is talk about them. As a matter of fact, merely talking about problems can make them worse. The psychotherapy I offer focuses on the solutions.
My goal is for people to feel better as quickly as possible. Although some people prefer to stay in therapy with me long-term, I specialize in brief psychotherapy – that is, many people feel better in 3 months or so and either cut back or end therapy.
Behavior change is hard! That’s why I’m here! Knowledge alone is rarely enough to cause changes in our behavior.
Growth is inherent in the human condition and I believe in everyone’s abilities to change, no matter how many times they’ve tried, how far wrong they’ve gone, or how big the challenges are that they’re facing. Although I cannot guarantee that therapy will be effective for you, I’ve seen help hundreds of people before you live happier, healthier lives.
Most people like weekly sessions to quickly make progress and maintain their momentum. Once they are starting to feel better, people may prefer to come in every 2 weeks or once a month until they are ready to end therapy. It’s not unusual for people to come back for a booster session several months or even years later when something difficult comes up in their lives.
I use a variety of techniques based on what specific problems the person is reporting. For example, research shows that cognitive behavioral therapy is best for treating depression, so that’s what I’ll start off using for someone who is suffering from depression. Research also shows that mindfulness-informed therapy can be effective with anxiety, so I’ll incorporate those techniques with someone who is often anxious. EMDR is another approach I use for treating trauma, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse. I also use motivational enhancement techniques for individuals who want to make behavior changes. (See the Approaches page for more information about the treatment I provide.)
During the day, I offer individual therapy and coaching for adults. In the mornings, I serve as a consultant on research projects. In the evenings, I offer group therapy for adults and also teach several 6-week classes on a variety of topics. For more information about the work I do, see Services.
I am solution-focused, which means that I use evidence-based practices that will help people resolve their problems and feel better as quickly as possible. Rather than just talking about one’s problems, I teach people specific skills that will help them make meaningful and lasting changes in their life. These transformations allow one to enjoy the life s/he was meant to live.
If you’ve been disappointed in therapy before because you didn’t feel like it was helping, consider therapy with me. People who’ve felt stuck in therapy with others have found that working with me gives them enough power to get the results they want.

Yes, therapy is an investment in terms of time, money, and energy. It is a gift that many people give themselves and to others, as well. It’s also an invaluable gift that keeps on giving. Although one cannot put a price tag on one’s happiness and well-being, people whose lives have improved through therapy say that it was time and money very well spent.
Yes, several times. I continue to find my own therapy to be very transformative.
Actually, it’s not. The only career I ever wanted was to be a clinical psychologist. It is a gift and a privilege to have the opportunity to help people make changes and to witness the miracles that unfold from our work together. At the end of the day, I feel energized, not depleted. This work feeds my soul.
Locally, I like to bass fish at Charles D. Owen lake, Lake Junaluska and Lake Lure. Offshore I fish in OBX and Alaska.
I’m extra.
